Teen Boy’s Bedroom Makeover: $100 Room Challenge Week Three

Welcome to week three of the $100 Room Challenge hosted by Erin of Lemons, Lavender and Laundry!ย  If you are not familiar with the challenge you can read about it here. For this month I am making over my teenage son’s bedroom. It’s in need of some major help, mostly of the cleaning variety! The before pictures can be seen in Week One and the closet makeover can be found in Week Two.

This week we decided to tackle painting! Although I am in love with the navy blue paint the bedroom originally had, Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore, it was just too dark for this space. Light and bright is what is needed! Here is a reminder of the before photo in all of its disgusting glory.

Three walls have been painted Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore that I had color matched at Lowes. I do love Benjamin Moore’s line of paints and have used them many times but it is pricey. On a $100 budget it just wasn’t possible to use for this project. I was very impressed with the coverage of the Valspar Signature paint. Even though it took two coats of paint the navy was almost completely covered in one coat.

As I was rolling paint I realized there was no way that 1 gallon of paint was going to cover the entire room. Luckily I keep my leftover paint from other projects! I painted the wall behind my son’s bed with the leftover paint from the boy’s bathroom makeover. The color is Mark Twain Ombra Gray by Valspar and I think it compliments the Revere Pewter well.

Even after a fresh coat of paint it’s still pretty disgusting in here but at least it’s brighter now! Instead of actually cleaning up like a normal person my son decided to push all of his furniture and junk into the center of the room when I told him to prep his room to be painted. I was not happy at all when I saw that but let it go since I had a warm day and needed to paint.

He was told to clean up for the past day and half so that I could take my after pictures. Instead he has sat and reminisced over all of the junk he has found and discovered new things to tinker with. Watch for him on Hoarders in 2030. Being the mean mom that I am I took pictures anyway. Unfortunately it is snowing and so gray outside that the lighting proved challenging as well. Instead of using artificial light I wanted to show you how much brighter a room can be by just changing the wall color. It also looks so much bigger now even with the clutter and mess!

New bedding was purchased this fall in anticipation of the makeover on 70% off clearance from Target. Instead of putting on the old bedding until the reveal he opened the new package. At least there are actually sheets on the bed now so I can’t complain too much!

I’m happy to have marked two items off our checklist from week one. Paint and new bedding. Let’s take a look at the budget.

Budget $100

Money Spent

Closet Lights $23.99

Paint and Supplies $32

Bedding set $13.49

Money Left to Spend $30.52

We still have a lot left to conquer and not much money!

  1. I really like that change, it looks so much less cave like and more life like! My son leaves his curtains closed at all times in his bedroom!

  2. Love the new paint colors, and they look great with the bedding! I’m always amazed at the power of paint. Can’t wait to see the reveal!

  3. Kid’s rooms are so hard because they feel the need to live in there while we’re working on them. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Love the new wall color. Good luck on getting him to clean up. I did my daughter’s room in September and it’s already so messy that I can barely get in there. That’s the curse of creative kids I guess. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. It’s looking fab ๐Ÿ™‚ Love the paint colors too.

  5. I love the paint color! It really brightens up the room!

  6. Ahhh teens. You’ve gotta love ’em or they might not live! ๐Ÿ˜‰ If it’s anything like my teens’ room, you’ll be lucky to have a week or two where it’s spotless – just enough time to take pictures to remember it looked like that! The paint looks fabulous!

  7. Great color choice for brightening up the room, and I think the other color really compliments well. Good luck on getting it clean… my kids are the same way: find lost treasures, play with them, forget to clean ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Love the color choices, it makes the room feel bigger! Looking forward to seeing the finished room!

  9. Hoarders 2030??!!LOL! that cracked me up. The new paint color is looking so good!
