Summer 2017 Farmhouse Home Tour

Welcome friends! It’s the first official day of summer! Today I’m sharing my home tour with you. Enjoy!

Let’s get started on the front porch. I went with a patriotic theme as red, white and blue just scream summer to me. You can read more about my front porch here.

Moving inside you step into my teeny tiny foyer. I found this free Land of the Free Because of the Brave printable on Pinterest. You can print out your own from Loving Mountain Life here. Using free printables is one of the ways I save money on seasonal home decor. Another fun updates is my crock is holding a faux fiddle fig plant from Michael’s. My name is Tracy and I am a plant killer. Faux is the only way to go indoors for me!

Step into the dining room. I kept it super simple in here. Combining natural textures like the wooden bowl, twine balls and linen table runner keep it light and airy for summer. For the table, Kirkland’s had this centerpiece for a steal! The glass bottles and my faux peachy pink ranunculus are the perfect pairing! Don’t look too closely or you will see the “art” my 5 year old left for me. A new tabletop is now on the to do list!

Come on in to the kitchen. Fresh cut chives from our herb garden in a simple ceramic pitcher adorn the table. Yes they are real but I won’t feel as guilty when they die since they were free. The shelves were changed up a bit to incorporate the cute copper tea kettle I found at an estate sale.

My kitchen counters are usually pretty clear as I am an anti clutter person. Our coffee maker and Rae Dunn collection take up one small section leaving the rest of the countertops open for food preparation.

Every summer the kids and I do a bucket list and try as hard as we can to mark everything off. We have a very busy summer planned this year so it’s going to be close if we get everything done in time!

IMG_2807

Last but not least is the family room. Did you notice my new antique sewing machine table? It’s the Mother’s Day gift I bought for myself. I saw it in a local boutique and had to have it!

This past month I made a new purchase (the buffalo check rug) since my naughty little piggie Neil ruined the sisal one I had in here previously. I planned to buy another natural fiber rug (I am in love with Jute) but was out voted. The kids and husband said they needed our new rug to be soft. Overstock had a great selection of wool rugs and it was so hard to choose!

IMG_2823

So I started with the rug and I ended up buying new pillows too. It always seems to snowball for me!

IMG_2824

And no, I did not clean the shoe mess up for you. It’s real life over here. We are constantly switching between our flip flops and farm boots throughout the day. I was more than happy for the backpack mess to be put away for the summer though! Next house a mudroom is a must!!

Patriotic Summer Front Porch

This is the first house that I have owned with a true front porch. I love to style it for the different seasons. The navy blue rockers give the house a down home country feel and look great paired with Americana decor. Our family looks forward to Memorial Day and July 4th celebrations every summer and I would like my home to reflect that.

First new pillows were purchased for the rocking chairs at Tuesday Morning. Their selection of outdoor pillows were all too brightly colored or too expensive for my small budget. Instead I purchased these adorable American flag pillows for $15 each. I loved the brass star button details!

I wanted them to hold up to the elements so I purchased Scotchguard Heavy Duty Water Shield from Amazon. It is supposed to protect outdoor furniture and fabrics. This is the first time I have used this product and so far so good. We had a bad rainstorm last night and the pillows repelled the water well.

IMG_1679

Following the directions I coated both sides of each pillow letting them dry fully before flipping them over. I wore gloves so I did not get it on my skin and used plastic bags to protect the grass.

This cute little chalk painted table remains on our porch year round and I change up the decor seasonally. It was a flea market find from NJ and I painted it with Annie Sloan chalk paint in Provence. By shopping the house I was able to save some money! The sign was left over from last summer, the flags were a Hobby Lobby clearance find and everything else I already owned.

IMG_1762

Besides the pillows the only other thing I purchased was flowers. Costco had the lavender topiary for $20! I had to drive to two stores to find it but it was worth the hunt.

IMG_1768

The fern was from Lowe’s and just screamed Southern front porch to me! My husband was not thrilled when he saw it as we have a whole woods full of ferns in our backyard… I could have dug some up for free. Oops!

On the front door I hung up my patriotic heart I found at Christmas Tree Shops last summer. I love that store for seasonal goodies.

I am in love with the way our front porch turned out and I can’t wait to spend time on it all summer sittin’ and sippin’.

My summer family room tour

Family room styled for summer

The best part about having a neutral decor palette is the ability to easily change pillows and accessories with the seasons. I never have to worry about my seasonal items matching the furniture or wall color. The first floor of the house is updated for each holiday. For the summer I decided to keep out the Americana style pillows that I found at Target late July on clearance (70% off! yay!). The patriotic look just says summer to me and they tie in with the two pieces of flag wall art I have in the room. The red and white bandana print pillows are double sided (the other side being a plain linen) and are easy to coordinate with seasonal ones by simply flipping them over. I did take down the Fourth of July banner and sign I had on the mantel and left it very basic with minimal decor.

The armoire is actually a matching piece to my bedroom set. We downsized when we moved to this home and there was no way it would fit into our current bedroom. The movers were happy to hear that! This sucker is solid and HEAVY. I’m still searching for artwork to add to the wall on the right side. I am taking my time finding pieces that I love rather than buying “something” just to fill the space.

I found this sweet little side table at Hobby Lobby (for $10! 90% off) a few weeks ago. The small blue table that was previously in this space has been relocated to the master bedroom next to my chair.

Tucked in the corner is a small rocking chair that belonged to my great grandmother on my mother’s side. The pillow is from Target and reverses to a red striped pattern. The curtains are light blocking panels purchased from Target last year. They work well keeping it cool in here from the blazing hot Virginia sun. With so many windows and sliding doors this room heats up quickly!

This is the corner next to the kitchen. I am in love with this dresser. You can see my previous post about it here: http://www.jerseygirlinthesouth.com/chalk-painted-dresser-love/

The empty space near the back door used to be The Little One’s second toy area. He wanted to be near me every minute of the day and luckily he has (mostly) gotten over that. I need my space! The toys have been moved into the playroom. This week I have been perusing Pinterest for DIY plans to build a sofa table. I have not made up my mind yet which one I am going to attempt to build. My husband is burnt out on projects right now so this one is all me. Hopefully The Big One will help…

I hope you enjoyed my “summer look”! Do you change your decor seasonally too?
