DIY Farmhouse Style Powder Room Makeover

DIY Farmhouse style powder room makeover

Since the powder room is one of our most used guest spaces I decided it was next in line for a farmhouse style makeover. I painted the bright green when we first moved in and wow was that the wrong decision! Colorful cow paintings hung in there which have since been relocated into the playroom. They are bright fun colors and better suited for the kids space.

When we moved in our bathroom was more of a modern style. All of the fixtures were brushed nickel and while they were nice that is not my style at all. A new light fixture, faucet, hardware and mirror were purchased on my first shopping trip. I never even took a before picture! The vanity matches the kitchen cabinets but I knew I wanted a different look. Some leftover chalk paint from my DIY dresser project was the perfect solution. (found here)

Here are the before pictures:

I am a huge farmhouse and HGTV fan and of course fell in love with shiplap instantly when I saw it on Fixer Upper. If I had it my way every wall in this house would be covered in white shiplap. The husband would never go for that but he settled for one accent wall in the powder room. Hey, I take what I can get. All of the other walls were painted white for a more cohesive look.

There are so many tutorials on Pinterest explaining how to shiplap a wall. We decided to use shiplap planks from Home Depot rather than use the plywood method. It was much pricier (this small wall cost $70 in materials) but my husband preferred this look. You can find some inspiration and instructions on my DIY Queen Pinterest board.

The cabinet received a makeover and I am so happy with the results. I used Americana Decor chalk paint in Everlasting and glass knobs from Hobby Lobby to complete the transformation. My husband also reused some leftover planks from my bedroom ceiling for the side of the cabinet. It was plain before and now it’s a beauty.

If you do not have an existing cabinet that can be made over, I would suggest purchasing one from Knotty Alder Cabinets. They sell ready to assemble cabinets perfect for the DIY’er.  Many of their cabinet finishes would work for a farmhouse style look similar to my powder room. My favorite cabinet style is the white shaker. Shaker cabinets are classic and timeless like you would find in an old farmhouse.

The walls were painted with Valspar Signature in Ultra White in Satin finish.

And now for the reveal!!!
