I’m going to let you all in on a little secret. While my house may appear well organized and neat, my closets are not! They start out that way but over time we just start shoving stuff everywhere. Every few months I empty each closet and do a little reorganizing. It’s a temporary fix but I am determined for this one to remain permanent! When we moved into our house almost two years ago I lost all steam by the time I got to our bedroom. My husband took his packed cardboard boxes and just stuck them on top of the shelves and then never unpacked them. He has an issue with holding onto things. I wouldn’t say he’s a hoarder per se, but if I was not here to rein him in I don’t know what would happen!

Every season I religiously go through my clothing and get rid of anything I have not worn. Anything that does not fit well or has wash wear gets the boot. My husband just keeps buying more but has a hard time parting with the old. Like I said, he could easily be a hoarder… Here are the embarrassing before pictures. HOT MESS I tell you! I am sharing them to show you how bad it had gotten!!! This is our “Monica closet”. Friends fan will get that reference. Wedding photos, a bag of computer wires, Amazon impulse purchases and a computer tower were all mixed in that mess. All of it found it’s way back to their proper homes.

I had a good start organizing with my shoe holders. Both came from my last house. Boots are hard to store so this hanging boot organizer from Amazon is perfect! The hanging shoe organizer is another Amazon find and I love it. Shoes can be stored in pairs or separately and since it’s vertical it takes up minimal space. My workout clothing and shorts are also in a hanging closet organizer. Dollar Tree had some awesome brown fabric bins that coordinate with the shoe holder. They were purchased for our hats but can be used to hold anything you like.

Plastic hangers never hang nicely and stick out awkwardly all over the place. My solution was velvet hangers. HomeGoods had a big selection but some of the packages had damaged hangers in them. While I was looking an employee let me know that her manager would discount them if I wanted to purchase. Yes please! Our closet now feels more like a boutique than a bachelor pad. If you notice my husband’s clothes are also organized by sleeve length and color. Before he just haphazardly hung stuff wherever and it looked very sloppy.

Our other issue was the lighting. The fixture that came with the house cast off an yellow glow. It was hard to match colors in that light. While browsing Lowe’s I came across a new fixture for $12.98! I was hoping for an inexpensive light and could not believe the price! My husband installed it for me and I could not believe the difference. White pure light makes picking out your clothing so much easier! There are no windows on that side of the room so it was impossible to take a picture with the light off. You can see the details on the box. It is very pretty in person.

Another change I made was to hang my purses. I had them on the shelf and some of them ended up on the floor. Now they are easily accessible and the totes are all in one place. No more digging through the mess when I am trying to find a bag! Being a decorator I also had to add a fun monogram and art work. My budget for this project was $100 and I came in under!
